Moving is a big job, but with a little planning, you can make a smooth move into your new home.
Make a Plan
Start early, about a month in advance, and plan your process. Take inventory of your stuff. Take photos of your new space and consider where you want to put everything. Sell or donate any big items you no longer need, or don’t want to move.
Now consider how much you have, how far away your new home is, and how you will get your stuff to your new place. Friends and family may help you trek across town a few times, in return for dinner and drinks. You might rent a truck and do it yourself, or you might hire professional movers. Compare prices for services and insurance. If you are moving far away, consider the convenience of shipping items to yourself at your new address.
Pack Your Boxes
Start packing early, beginning with the things you use least. Gather boxes from your local liquor store, grocery store, or restaurant. Get every member of your family involved by packing his or her own things, and helping to pack shared things. Clearly mark your boxes with the name of the room or area where they will go. Wrap breakables in
Clearly mark your boxes with the name of the room or area where they will go. Wrap breakables in newspaper, pack every bag and container including laundry basket with stuff. Be careful not to overburden any boxes or containers with too much weight.
Pack the things you will need most immediately in clear containers so you can easily find them when you arrive. Have everyone pack a carry-on bag, with immediate necessities like a change of clothes, toothbrush, and personal items.
Now you’re ready to make your move, and make yourself at home in your new place.0
